What is a Pap Smear?
As part of your well-woman exam, a Pap smear is done to screen for precancerous and cancer cells in the cervix. Without treatment, abnormal cell changes can cause cancer. A Pap smear provides the opportunity to treat abnormal cells early and prevent the development of cancer. All women should have an annual exam to evaluate her entire body and specifically her pelvic organs. A Pap smear may or may not be done at every annual visit depending on the prior history of pap smears.
